Chronic Disease Prevention

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week program helping cancer survivors regain independence through physical activity. Studies show moderate exercise benefits physical and mental health, improves quality of life, reduces therapy side effects, boosts energy, and enhances self-esteem. The research-based program provides a safe, supportive environment for physical and social activities that strengthen the whole person, helping participants move beyond cancer in spirit, mind, and body. The Diabetes Prevention Program is a free, yearlong program for those at risk of diabetes. It emphasizes small lifestyle changes—healthy eating, regular exercise, and weight loss—to lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Guided by a trained leader, participants learn more nutritious eating, physical activity, and coping skills in a supportive group setting. DOWNLOAD FLYER HERE!

Yoga helps cancer patients regain control of their bodies and participate in recovery. Through poses, breathwork, and meditation, it can strengthen immunity, rebuild bones, manage lymphedema, reduce anxiety and pain, and repair treatment damage. All abilities are welcome; consult a doctor before joining. The free class is open to current and former cancer patients. 

Moving for Better Balance is an evidence-based Tai Chi program with eight fall-prevention movements. It improves balance, strength, flexibility, and mobility, boosting overall health and daily functioning. Participants may also see mental health benefits, reduced stress, better memory, and higher self-esteem. The class runs from 1 to 2 p.m. at the West Washington branch. DOWNLOAD FLYER HERE!

The Parkinson’s Disease exercise program is offered through a coordinated effort between Aurora Health Care and the Kettle Moraine YMCA. The program is designed specifically for those with Parkinson’s disease and is led by a physical therapist and a personal trainer. Participants spend 30 minutes on the treadmill or NuStep bike, followed by 30 minutes of strength training and flexibility work. Classes meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
