Former Executive Director Jack Murray Receives Dan Newhouse Leadership Award

[April 4, 2019] – John Murray, better known as “Jack,” was awarded the Dan Newhouse Leadership Award. Jack was the founder and first Executive Director of the Kettle Moraine YMCA Branch of the Milwaukee YMCA Association in 1969. In 1973, Jack led the Kettle Moraine YMCA to independence from the Milwaukee YMCA. In 1978, after an ambitious fundraising campaign, the reality of the West Washington location was the first building for the Kettle Moraine YMCA. In the next 20 years, Jack had multiple building and program expansions, membership grew significantly, and the Y became the leading non-profit in West Bend. Jack is still an active member of the Kettle Moraine YMCA and has served on the CEO selection committee.

The Dan Newhouse Leadership Award was created to recognize retired Wisconsin YMCA CEOs who have provided leadership to their respective Y community and Ys throughout the state along with CEOs who have shared their expertise nationally. Each winter, all 33 of the Wisconsin corporate Ys have an opportunity to nominate a retired Wisconsin YMCA CEO, living or deceased, to be recognized at the annual leadership conference.

“Jack’s legacy will never be forgotten, he was the leader of several influential community icons in accomplishing great things for West Bend and Washington County, “ said CEO Rob Johnson. Jon Lange, YMCA at Pabst Farms CEO and former CEO of the Kettle Moraine YMCA add, “Jack did so much to establish, grow, strengthen and ground the Y in its mission.”

The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of community. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y nurtures the potential of every youth and teen, improves the nation's health and well-being and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors.
