Swim Lessons/Aquatics

As with all of our programs, the goal for our aquatic program is to develop the whole person, spirit, mind, body. Teaching methods are designed to help each participant develop his/her fullest potential, to encourage awareness of safety, and to master skills to the best of their ability. The pool is an excellent place for youths and adults alike to make new friends, and most importantly, to have fun!

Parent/Child Swim Lessons

An introduction to the aquatics environment for parents and their child. Includes basic water safety, water orientation and adjustment.
Shrimp/Kippers           Age 6 - 18 months
Inia/Perch         Age 18 - 36 months
Pike I   Ages 3 years to 1st Grade
Pike II  Ages 3 years to 1st Grade Must have passed Pike I
Preschool Swim Lessons
(Ages 3 years to 1st Grade)

EEL I – Child must have passed Pike II to enroll. Children will work on learning the Front Crawl and also Develop skills on their back.

EEL II – Child must have passed Eel I to enroll. Children will work on endurance for the Front Crawl and begin the Back Stroke.

RAY/STARFISH – Child must have passed Eel II to enroll. Children will continue endurance work on the Front Crawl and refine the Back Crawl. They will also be introduced to the Elementary Backstroke

Youth Swim Lessons
(Children in 1st grade & older)

First time students will be evaluated for placement on the first day of class. Register for the day and time you prefer, our staff will place your child in the appropriate level based on records or pretest results. You may register for more than one day a week.

POLLIWOG– Red Cross Level I Swimmers are introduced to water acclimation and basic swimming skills.
               
GOLDFISH – Red Cross Level II Swimmers are taught to beginning front and back crawl skills while continue to build on basic swimming skills.

GUPPY – Red Cross Level III Swimmers work on front and back crawl and begin elementary backstroke.

MINNOW – Red Cross Level IV Swimmers use the correct front crawl, elementary backstroke and backstroke technique and begin sidestroke.

FISH – Red Cross Level V Swimmers increase endurance and refine previous strokes and are introduced to the breaststroke.

FLYING FISH – Red Cross Level VI Swimmers increase endurance and refine previous strokes and are introduced to the butterfly.

SHARK – Red Cross Level VII Swimmers increase endurance and refine previous strokes and learn survival techniques.

Aquatic Exercises
For various age groups

  Play N' Splash
Ages 4-9

Skill activities and games divided into 45 minutes of organized gym activities and 40 minutes of a swim class. Located in Track Gym/Pool.

  Child Adaptive Aquatics
Ages 5-12

For children unable to participate in traditional swim class because of special needs, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, physical limitations or developmental delays. This class will include basic swim skills, balance, coordination and gross and fine motor skills. An adult must accompany the child in the water.

  Extreme Water Activities
Ages 9-13

Challenge your child to a different water activity each week. Must be comfortable in the deep end of the pool.

  Youth "Aqua Tech"
6-8th Graders

Become a more efficient swimmer work on stroke techniques, turns and interval workouts. Requirements: completed the “FISH” level and goggles.

  Synchronized Swim
A rhythmic water activity that includes basic swimming strokes and stunts. Must have completed the MInnow level of our swim program or be pretested for placement. Class limited to 12 participants.

  Adult-Teen Swim Lessons
Work at your own pace, gradually reducing fear and learning to relax in the water and then to swim.

  Aquatic Exercise
Water calisthenics and aerobic exercise for a total body workout. Improve cardiovascular ability, muscular endurance and strength. No prior swimming skills.

  JOG/W.A.V.E. Combo
Deep and shallow water workout designed to improve cardiovascular ability, muscular endurance and strength by using various types of equipment and water resistance. This class requires no prior swimming skills.

  Joint Effort
Part of the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program. Shallow water workout for individuals with arthritis, joint, and muscular concerns. Non-impact toning and trimming focuses on flexibility and range of motion of the joints.

  Water Exercise
Part of the Half Century Program Designed for active older adults promotes toning, strength training and flexibility. Uses barbells, noodles, kickboards and natural resistance of water during this low-impact workout.

Diving
Ages 6+

Diving classes are offered to children who are at least 6 years old and have completed the Goldfish level in the Youth Swim Program or Rays/Starfish in the Preschool Swim Program. Beginner Level: No off the diving board experience Intermediate Level: Able to perform basic front dive off the board Advanced Level: Successfully completed intermediate level class or with instructor consent
Lifeguarding Class
Ages 15+

The YMCA On the Guard II Certification course will train individuals to have a working knowledge of an aquatic environment, prevention of hazards in an aquatic area, and potential lifesaving skills.

Prerequisites:
• Participants must be at least 15 years old at the start of the course.

• Participants must be able to meet the physical and preliminary swimming requirements.

• Participants must have current American Red Cross CPR the Professional Rescuer, AED, oxygen administration, and Standard First Aid Certifications or successfully complete these courses which are being offered during the Lifeguard Course.

Water Safety Instruction
Ages 16+

The American Red Cross Water Safety Course (WSI) is designed to train swim and water safety instructor candidates.

Prerequisites:

• Participants must be 16 years of age by the end of the course.

• Participants must successfully pass pre-course safety skill test.

The skills test is based on proficiency level equal to Level VI of the American Red Cross Learn To Swim Program. Prospective candidates who hold current certification in Lifeguard Training will exceed the requirement for taking the Safety Skill Test; however, all prospective candidates must undergo pretesting.

• Participants must possess a Fundamental of Instructor Training Certification issued within one year.

• Participants must possess a current American Red Cross Community CPR certificate and Standard First Aid or successfully complete the course BEFORE the last session of instruction.
